Saint Seiya, the Asgard Saga
The Asgard SAGA was an original story created for the Saint Seiya Anime to fill in the time between the Sanctuary and Poseidon sagas of the manga, the idea was to stall for time until Kurumada could finish the Poseidon saga in the manga.
An fill in they did.
The spirit and success of saint seiya rests solely within two things: the initial galactic tournament saga and the eventual sactuay saga and I have to say that the anime version of these events is vastly superior to what is in the manga. What I believe finally happened with Asgard is that the animation studio people were more fans of saint seiya than any one else at the time and truly understood the themes behind it. Thus creating one of the most compelling sagas in the anime, probably only behind to the battle of the sanctuary itself in terms of story ideas, drama and animation. This is evident since these are the sme people involved in the creation of “Legend of the Scarlet Youth” (Seinto Seiya Shinku no Shōnen Densetsu), a movie that distills and brings to the fore everything that is good about Saint Seiya in only 75 minutes.
The themes, story beats, character ideas and conflict present in Asgard are what makes Saint Seiya great, each battle and encounter is not just a physical battle but a process of remembering and healing trauma for what are basically kids.
Talking about the kids, contrary to the previous saga, the enemies here are equals to the saints. They are basically what seiya and friends would be if they were fighting for another pantheon, they even have their own “saori” in the form of Hilda being the representation of divinity they fight to protect. And that is key, these kids are not megalomaniac idiots like most of the sanctuary folks, they are loyal servants to their “goddess” and are willing to die for her.
Additionally they are also equal in power to seiya and friends, none of them are at Gold Saint power levels (except for maybe Dubhe Sigfried and perhaps Mizar Syd/AlcorBud). The battles are hard fought with neither side the clear winner until the end.
All these things make this saga incredible and unfortunately superior to the following Poseidon Saga. And this is were the saint seiya anime ran into trouble, all these great things are somehow non-existing or greatly dinished in the Poseidon Saga.
If you read the manga the poseidon saga is the first introduction to two concepts that were somehow new:
- More than one incarnate god was walking the earth at the same time as Athena/Saori.
- Other beings similar in power to the saints also existed, not only that but they could rival the gold saints in power too.
Well, the asgard Saga kinda spoils this, since you get both things (Hilda is not a goddes, she is Odin´s messenger but is close enough) and some of the fights against the Warrior Gods present a better treath than some of the battle with Poseidon’s Sea Generals
honestly, if I think about it I’ve had more maybes than actual relationships.
I can count 4 long term relations in my life, 1 of which was on and off for 20 years. Its the relations that certainly did not happen or develop that have defined me the most. I lived with Fer for the best part of 10 years of my life, but the details of those days are intertwined and form a big mess of memories, while on the other hand I remember the day Natalia told me not to suffer over her (as if) down to the most minute detail. I am now thinking that from her perspective that day probably does not hold much significance.

We are at the register line in the supermarket with my wife, the one right next to us also has a couple doing their grocery shopping. The woman is someone I have had sex with, we are both playing dumb looking the other way. Now the payment system is down and we are all stuck here. Playing dumb continues akwardly.
Aaaaand now they are at the bus stop… sigh

I remained there, sitting down on the fence wall, looking at plain nothingness trying to process what just happened.
Fernanda and I were seeing each other for the past couple of months and sleeping with each other for the last few weeks. I had to leave my girlfriend to be with her, so I did what I had to do and cut things off with Karla before trying to get back together with the person I had been in love with since I was 14. This was not the first time we were trying to rekindle our relationship for the last 20 years. It would not be the last.
Something shifted, we had not seen or talked for the past ten days. I finally put together enough courage to text her. She said she would come over to talk after work. The conversation was short, she said she could not do it, that I made her too anxious and made her feel too much to be with me, so much so that it was overwhelming. I said I understood, that I had chosen to be with her but clearly I made the wrong choice. She said that maybe I was right, got up and left.
I was left there, the word emptyhanded is appropiate enough.
